Benefits of Avocado


Avocado is one of the nutritious and healthiest foods available in this universe . Avocadoes contain more than 22 nutrients essential for our body like vitamin A , B , C , E , K , copper, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and potassium. Avocados also contain protein, fiber, and several beneficial phytochemicals such as glutathione, beta-sitosterol and lutein, which may protect us against different types of disease and illness.

It keeps our heart healthy:

Avocado contains folic acid and vitamin B6 . This regulates the homocysteine levels in body. Higher levels of Homocysteine is linked to increased risk of heart disease. Avocado also contains vitamin E , glutathione and mono -unsaturated fast which keep the heart healthy .

It Helps Lower the cholesterol levels

Avocados contain one compound in sufficient quantity which is known as beta-sitosterol . It is very effective in lowering the blood cholesterol levels. According to a study conducted in America , patients with mild hypercholesterolemia were given a diet for about 12 days which included avocados. It was found that they had 18 percent decrease in total blood cholesterol levels, a 20 percent decrease in both LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglyceride levels, and a 10 percent increase in HDL (good cholesterol) levels.

As Avocados are a very rich source of potassium, they help regulate the blood pressure levels in your body to a great extent.

Avocadoes act as Anti-Inflammatory

There are two compound present in avocadoes which are called P olyphenols and flavonoids. These are phytonutrient which have anti-inflammatory properties, so they reduce the risk of inflammatory and degenerative disorders.

Avocados are a rich source of carotenoid lutein. This compound is known to protect our eyes against cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

A study has shown that, when participants ate salads including avocados, they absorbed five times the amount of carotenoids ( nutrient group that include beta carotene and lycopene) than those who did not eat avocados.Avocado consumption helps us in an increased nutrient absorption.

Avocadoes cause allergy in some people. But it is vey rare.

A case report on Avocado allergies has been published in the journal Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology . As per this report avocado allergies are associated with "coughing, wheezing, nasal stuffiness, generalized urticaria and periorbitaledema."
